Media Logic Enables People to Develop IT Careers

Gena’s transition from homelessness to stability began 9 years ago. She began the journey as a single parent with four children ages 2-6; no drivers license and no job. She was diagnosed with dyslexia at age 4 and had left school with an eighth grade education. She had to spend six months in a domestic violence shelter system before finding a two-bedroom apartment. With her church supplying simple furniture, living supplies, and counseling, she was able to enroll at a local community college in the Project Self-Sufficiency program. Here she began rebuilding her life piece by piece with a school internship in the Employment Security, Workforce Training, and Student Employment offices.

Soon she was managing a student computer lab that helped students utilize the Workforce Training web site and job search software. She built a campus web site that pulled the three offices' job placement resources together and next built a job-tracking database system for the Workforce Training office as well as a database for the Student Employment office to track employment and new job opportunities. She graduated with an ATA in Computer Informational Systems (specializing in Business Management with a Microcomputer application/Support Specialist Certificate) and within days of graduating, was able to get a full-time Web Developer position.

With tremendous personal courage and the support and encouragement of many people and agencies, she has truly become an inspiration for others. Currently she is a software engineer at Pointshare and is preparing to buy a home for herself and her children, now aged 11-15. She describes her family as a team and has done her best to show them the importance of education, perseverance, and employment security. She’s completed the circle of her success by teaming up with the Women's Bureau and Media Logic, to develop a "Women in Technology" web site (http://www.wgit.org). The site will help bring women into the technology business by supplying crucial resources at “the click of a mouse”.
